Doti Herb Enterprise Development Program

The program was implemented by the financial support of Canadian Cooperation Office in Doti district from February 2000 to September 2001. The people of Latamandu, Banlek, Jojodamandu, Barbata and Lamikhal were the target groups of this program. The program was focused on formation of 20 saving and Credit Groups (SCG) including more than 80% women in every group, Training on saving and credit management, herbal cultivation, collection and processing trainings, development of cooperative, herb processing, marketing etc. Out of 20 (SCG), 6 groups were formed of the Dalit women and these groups were identified as landless people, which were promoted for the herbs collector groups. In total there are 362 people in 20 SCGs out of them 323 are women and 39 are men. These groups formed a cooperative named Doti Jadibuti Udhyam Multipurpose Cooperative Ltd. About Six hundred people have been getting benefit by cultivation, collection, processing and marketing of herbs through cooperative. The existing herbal processing unit is operated through the cooperative.

    • Purchase of own land near by road for shifting and establishment of Herb processing plant
    • Provided NRs. 30,000 to each of 20 SCG as revolving fund
    • Model Nursery development for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs)
    • Distribution of MAPs to local people
    • Provided training on saving and credit management and cooperative development
    • Provided trainings on herb conservation, cultivation, harvesting/ collection and processing technique
    • Activities for environment conservation, income generation and livelihood
    • Local people are engaged in herb cultivation, harvesting and processing
    • Marketing of extracted herb products
    • Information dissemination on herb conservation, harvesting and processing
    • Awareness on sustainable utilization of herb
    • Massive social mobilization process, mass meetings, personal visit and meetings etc.
